We engineer the connection between SAP and the automation layer on the warehouse floor — conveyors, ASRS, AMRs, AGVs, robotics and control systems. We are not an automation equipment vendor or systems integrator for the hardware itself; we design and build the software architecture that lets SAP drive and monitor it.
How the layers fit together — and when they don't all apply
A fully automated distribution centre can involve a layered picture: SAP S/4HANA at the top, SAP EWM orchestrating warehouse execution, a Material Flow System or integration layer translating warehouse tasks into equipment instructions, a WCS coordinating equipment-level execution, PLC/SCADA controlling the machinery, and the physical layer of conveyors, ASRS, AGVs, AMRs and robotics underneath. Most projects use only some of these layers. A site with a handful of conveyor zones may connect EWM MFS directly to PLCs with no WCS at all; a site with dozens of heterogeneous automation cells from different vendors typically needs a WCS to absorb that complexity. We size the architecture to the actual equipment landscape rather than defaulting to the most complex configuration.
EWM MFS: Telegram-based communication
SAP EWM's Material Flow System (MFS) communicates with programmable logic controllers through structured telegrams — fixed-format messages exchanged over a defined communication channel — to send warehouse tasks and receive execution confirmations. MFS is a strong fit when the automation landscape is relatively homogeneous and the PLC layer can speak the telegram protocol directly, keeping the architecture inside the SAP stack: fewer moving parts, one less system to operate and monitor.

WCS as an intermediate integration layer
When the automation landscape includes multiple equipment vendors, protocols or a level of routing and sequencing logic that doesn't belong in SAP, a Warehouse Control System sits between EWM and the equipment. The WCS aggregates equipment-level control, exposes a more consistent interface upward, and absorbs vendor-specific protocol differences so EWM doesn't have to. We design the integration contract between EWM and the WCS — which system owns which decision — and configure the SAP side of that interface.
PLC/SCADA connectivity and equipment-level control
Below the WCS or MFS layer, PLCs and SCADA systems handle real-time control of conveyors, sorters and ASRS: motor control, sensor input, safety interlocks and local sequencing. We work with automation partners on the interface specification — what data crosses the boundary, in what format and at what latency — without taking on PLC programming itself.
AMR/AGV fleet integration
Autonomous mobile robots and automated guided vehicles are typically coordinated by a fleet management system supplied by the robotics vendor. We integrate that fleet manager with EWM — usually through REST APIs or message-based interfaces — so that warehouse tasks generated in EWM become mission requests to the fleet, and mission status and exceptions flow back into warehouse execution.

RFID, scanning, vision and exception handling
RFID, barcode scanning and vision systems provide the identification and verification points that keep automated execution trustworthy — confirming what's on a conveyor, in a tote or on a pallet at each handoff. Automation monitoring is as much about exceptions as about the happy path: when a warehouse task stalls, a PLC reports a fault or a robot loses its mission, the system needs to surface that clearly rather than fail silently. We design monitoring and alerting so operators can see what's stuck and why, with a human-in-the-loop process for investigation and recovery — we do not aim to engineer full autonomous self-healing, which is rarely realistic or desirable in a live warehouse.
